Decanter Retailer Awards Best English & Welsh wine specialists award logo
Winners!
So, we did it – we won the Best English & Welsh Wine Specialist category in the Decanter Retailer Awards 2020, beating Waitrose, the reigning champions, into second place. To win the most respected industry award for this specialism, 15 months after launching, is truly humbling. Thank you to all of our loyal customers who have been discovering the breadth and depth of English & Welsh wine talent through us this past year.To mark our win, we’ve put together a “20:20%” sale – 20 wines, all with 20% off. Some remarkable wines, at outstanding prices. Do make the most of this exceptional offer!

We’re not resting on our laurels, and have been out visiting vineyards this month with a view to refreshing and enhancing our range, especially our English Sparkling Wine offering. Several new wines are already in stock, with more to come. We have the multi-award-winning Ashling Park Cuvée NV, with 6 full years of lees ageing behind it, a gorgeous sparkler from Wiston Estate, winners of Winery of the Year in the WineGB 2020 Awards, and Chapel Down’s Three Graces 2015, the most affordable of the three white English Sparkling Wines to win a Platinum medal in the Decanter World Wine Awards 2020. It’s not all about fizz though – we’ve introduced a wonderfully food-friendly orange wine, the Litmus Wines Orange Bacchus 2019 into our range too. Find out more about these wines below!

Vineyards up and down the country are now in the throws of the 2020 grape picking. Next month we’ll have an initial report on the 2020 vintage – in the meantime, we hope that you will enjoy a glass or two of the fruits of their labours from previous years!Best wishes

NEW WINES
Ashling Park Cuvée NV English Sparkling Wine
Ashling Park Cuvée NV (£29.49)One of the most awarded English Sparkling Wines of recent years, winner of a Decanter Gold, a WineGB Gold & Trophy and Sommelier Wine Award Silver. The Ashling Park Cuvée NV shows great freshness on the nose, with aromas of white flowers and ripe stone fruit. These flavours are echoed on the palate, which displays fine intensity of fruit, offset by a great core of chalky acidity. The finish is crisp and precise with impressive persistence and balance. Delicious for drinking now, but with terrific ageing potential. It has had a phenomenal 6 years on lees. Ashling Park is a 50 acre estate in the charming hamlet of West Ashling, West Sussex.

Litmus Wines Orange Bacchus 2019 (£14.99)Pale gold in colour the wine displays hazelnut, fennel and marzipan characters on the nose. The palate has a touch of white pepper spice, is incredibly generous and complex and boasts a long broad palate with a gripping astringency and smooth, long finish. Enjoy with oily meats and spicy dishes. John Worontschak is the chief wine maker. John has been making English wine since 1988, and in 2010 he decided to create wines to move away from the traditional fruity English white wine style. The Litmus range is designed to highlight the very best of cool climate English wines, promoting balance, complexity and length of flavour – and in our view succeeds beautifully.

Chapel Down Three Graces 2015 English Sparkling Wine
Chapel Down Three Graces 2015 (£33.99)A Platinum Medal winner in the Decanter World Wine Awards 2020, this exceptional English Sparkling Wine from the largest, but also one of the most innovative, English wine producers displays complex aromas of baked apple, fresh strawberry and shortcrust pastry which are followed by a rich palate with a fine, smooth mousse. 2015 was an excellent vintage in England, with good conditions throughout. The grapes underwent cool fermentation in stainless steel followed by full malolactic fermentation. A portion (3% 2009, 5% 2010, 3% 2011, 4% 2013) of this wine is from reserve stocks which has been stored in barrel and tank which adds complexity and depth to the palate. Maturation on fine lees in tank for six months before bottling and three years further ageing on lees in bottle complete the ageing process.

Wiston Estate Brut NV (£26.49)Wiston Brut NV is a refreshing, elegant and complete sparkling wine, with a fine complex finish that combines youthful purity of crisp green apples and ripe lemons with richer, mature characters from extended lees-aging. Made from a blend of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier in equal parts, this beautifully balanced wine is a fantastic expression of Wiston’s house style. Wiston Estate has been in the hands of the Goring family since 1743 and is presided over today by Harry and Pip Goring. It was Pip’s long-held conviction that the estate held the potential to grow high quality grapes. The 16-acre vineyard, planted in 2006, was the fruit of her dream and tenacity. Under the aegis of award-winning winemaker Dermot Sugrue, the tight-knit team spares no effort in the vineyard or winery.
