White Castle Vineyard are red wine specialists: the quality of their reds really is second to none. The Rondo grapes from two vintages, 2018 and 2019, were both hand harvested and the juice fermented in stainless steel vats. 2018 was a fabulous year weather-wise, and the grapes were excellent, but Robb Merchant of White Castle felt it just didn’t quite sing in the way he wanted. It sat in French Oak barrels and then the 2019 vintage came along. Tasting this from barrel, some gut instinct told him to try blending with the 2018, and the magic happened. There is a pallet-load of blackcurrant and plum on the palate, and sweet spice and toast. A lovely long finish ensues. A perfect accompaniment with red meat, cheese or on its own, perfect for fireside lazing.
