Stopham Estate Vineyard’s story began in 2007 when winemaker Simon Woodhead planted 21,000 vines on his sandy south-facing15 acre estate, following the successful completion of a Viticulture course at Plumpton Agricultural College in East Sussex. Joined by Assistant Winemaker Tom Bartlett in 2010, just in time for the first vintage, the pair shared a common passion for English wine. Their Pinot Blanc is dry with zippy acidity. It has aromas and flavours packed with citrus freshness and juicy pear notes.
JancisRobinson.com review: “This wine has such a gloriously nutty nose that it just makes me smile. If you blitzed up raw almonds, sunflower seeds, hemp hearts and cashews, then scraped the buttery, creamy, indescribably savoury-sweet-wholesomeness onto a slice of ripe pear and drizzled it with fresh lime juice, then transformed it into wine, that would be this wine. Tingling, scalpel-fine, brined jalapeno-and-lime frame. I am beginning to think that England might be turning into one of the most exciting places for elegant, interesting Pinot Blanc (Alsace and Germany, move over?). White pepper fills the finish with fragrance and bite. If I were putting together a restaurant wine list in the UK today, this would be on it. I want it with fat, buttery scallops. I want it with Dover sole poached in Cornish vermouth. I want it with creamy spinach soup spiked with freshly grated nutmeg. I want it with broad-bean humus and roasted cauliflower and glistening, golden, crispy-skinned roast chicken. (In the end, we drank it with the simplest supper of tiny new potatoes, boiled; fresh spinach, just wilted; salt, black pepper, lemon juice, olive oil – it was so perfect I could have almost cried.) This is a fabulous, ridiculously delicious wine that just needs to be on the table, one loaded with good food. 17.5/20″ (Tamlyn Currin)
