Magnolia blossom mingled with wild-strawberry on the nose, and a tart cranberry, strawberry and lemon palate

England’s oldest commercial vineyard was planted in 1952 and went on to release the first commercial range of English wines. Hambledon Vineyard now comprises over 200 acres of vineyards and the only gravity-fed, state-of-the-art winery in the UK. Their Classic Cuvee Rose NV has a beautiful, vivid wild-strawberry pink with a hue of red onion skin on the rim. On the nose, the magnolia blossom is followed stridently by perfumed wild-strawberry compote with hints of buttered white sourdough toast. The palate is rich and mouth-filling with flavours of strawberry balanced by zingy tart cranberry and pithy Amalfi lemon notes. The texture is creamy with a clean, crisp, yeasty finish. The blend is 90% Chardonnay with 10% Pinot Noir red wines, mostly from the 2014 harvest, with tank-aged reserve wines added. The Pinot Noir and the majority of the Chardonnay underwent a slow, temperature-controlled fermentation in stainless steel tanks at about 18°C. 4% of Chardonnay was fermented in specially selected French oak barrels for extra complexity and structure. After resting for six months on fine lees, the wines were blended together with the reserve wines prior to bottling. A minimum of 33 months ageing on the lees followed.

www.jancisrobinson.com tasting note: “Pale Provençal pink. Creamy red fruit but still has that lovely smoky chalk character of the Première Cuvée. Dry but with a rounded fruit finish. Excellent fruit depth, just a little bit of feel sweetness on the finish so you get a sweet/sour Victoria plum finish and a slight boiled-sweets (hard-candy) after-effect. 16.5/20” (Julia Harding)
