Hazel End Vineyard Bacchus Dry 2014

Riesling-esque petrol notes on the nose, lashings of lime, white flowers and nectarine

We are delighted to be offering this older Bacchus, an absolute bargain. It’s rare to find English Bacchus with significant bottle age, which is an enormous shame. Bacchus has an interesting “parentage”, having been created in a German vine breeding institute; a crucial fact is that half its ancestry is Riesling. In its youth, Bacchus is perhaps more similar to Sauvignon Blanc, but as it ages, the Riesling comes out. The notes of petrol on the nose are clear here, together with ripe citrus and hawthorn blossom notes. On the palate, lashings of lime are evident, with some riper notes of nectarine. It was the hot summer of 1976 that induced Charles and Petronella Humphreys to plant vines on a particularly dry slope on their farm just a mile to the north of Bishops Stortford in Hertfordshire. It took nearly twenty years and two changes of site before the first commercial crop was harvested in 1996 but, since then, the wines from Hazel End have enjoyed a growing reputation.
