Simpsons Estate Canterbury Rosé 2015 – a genuinely unique rosé English Sparkling Wine: the intensity of the cherry aromas and flavours is captivating, with a lush red fruit backdrop. If this sounds too heavy for a rosé, don’t worry, the acidity gives it a magical freshness and moreishness. Made solely from Pinot Noir, and aged for 15 months on lees, the Canterbury Rose is delicately pink with a fine mousse and a soft bouquet of cherries, rose petal and strawberry sorbet. The Simpsons’ vineyards occupy glorious positions on the sunny, sheltered slopes of the North Downs of Kent, protected from the whimsy of the English climate by ancient woodland and anchored in the iconic chalky soils so highly revered in the world of both still and sparkling wine. On their French wine estate, the award-winning Domaine Sainte Rose in the Languedoc region, the Simpsons have always pursued the cleaner, truer flavours of the grape, and are now bringing this savoir-faire to their English vineyards. With rootstock meticulously matched to the soil and a new world-class winery just minutes from the vines, quality is the watchword.

Charles Palmer Pinot Noir 2018 – 2018 was a sensational vintage, allowing the grapes to ripen wonderfully and develop glorious red and black fruit qualities. The texture is notably silky and smooth, with a persistent finish that caresses the tongue. There is no oak used in this wine’s production – the family were keen for the fruit to be the unquestioned star of the show. Charles Palmer Vineyards is a family run wine estate at Winchelsea in Sussex. The estate’s vineyards benefit from an ideal climate for vines, with its close proximity to the sea, south facing slope, and its terroir in particular. The lowest part of the vineyard is a mere 5 metres from sea level and sits above a bed of Kimmeridgian clay similar to the Grand Crus of Burgundy. Production is small and meticulous. Every effort is made to ensure only the best grapes are produced and selected according to the family’s exacting standards.

Stanlake Park Grand Reserve – The Stanlake Park Grand Reserve NV is a superb example of the winemaker’s art, with the best samples of Rondo, Regent and Dornfelder from across three years (2015-2017) blended together and given time in French oak to add body and complexity. There are soft but intense red and black berry flavours mingled with vanilla and sweet spice from the oak, making a complex but very approachable red wine that is a flagship example of an English red blend. During the second half of the 20th century Stanlake Park was owned by the Leighton family, of which Jon Leighton had the vision to plant a vineyard in 1979, when a small test area of 500 vines was planted. The original vineyard was known as Thames Valley Vineyard, but was later renamed after the Stanlake Park estate itself. The initial test area was then expanded to over 15 acres and more than 10,000 vines. Winemaking takes place within a 17th Century Reformation barn which houses the largest winery in Berkshire, capable of handling over 200 tonnes of fruit in any one season. The fastidious attention to detail in the vineyard continues in the winery, where the entire process is carefully monitored and controlled by Nico Centonze, Stanlake Park’s winemaker.
