English Red Wines
a’Becketts Vineyard Penruddocke Red 2018
Back in 1999 Paul Langham was bored of working in the corporate world and one Saturday in June 1999, while drinking a glass of wine, he said out of the blue to his wife Lynn: “We must be able to do this” – and that is how their whole adventure in English Wine started. Lynn was able to find the right land in the right location and in April 2001 they planted their first vines and harvested their first vintage in 2003. The vineyard now extends to over 11 acres. Their Pinot Noir is only produced in the best vintages – which 2018 is one of, if not the absolute best to date. It is a classic, Burgundian style Pinot Noir – and the vines are burgundy clones – with a delicate, evocative cherry and raspberry nose, with soft, supple palate and cherry, cranberry and vanilla washing around the palate. The Langhams decided to oak 90% of the wine for 8 months in third fill French barrels as part of the wine making process and the results justify the decision, with the vanilla and silky texture rounding out the wine beautifully.
