Based in the sunny and sheltered Waveney Valley in South Norfolk, overlooking the villages of Earsham and Bungay, Flint Vineyard’s winemaker Ben Witchell crafts wines using a blend of innovation and a respect for tradition. The vineyard site was selected as one of the driest and sunniest regions in England and the south-east facing vines are planted on free-draining gravel and flint soil. 2017 was an interesting vintage that was at first set back by a late frost, which was followed by a heat-wave. This resulted in low-yielding, high-quality grapes and the Bacchus harvested at Martin’s Lane in Essex was some of the ripest and cleanest fruit possible. The free-run juice was separated from the later pressings and fermented using a variety of temperatures and yeast strains to yield six very different component wines each expressing a different aromatic trait of the grape variety. These individual wines were then carefully blended to give a complex and intensely aromatic example of Bacchus. The nose is intense and full of lime, passion fruit and cut herbs with an underlying elderflower fruit. On the palate, the wine is crisp with a lovely texture that lends an excellent length.
